bluEdevils UPDATE 10/1/07: NOW FOR THE NEWS!

October 1, 2007

1. Great news!! Members of last year’s baseball team took on the task of improving their playing field. The team applied for and received a grant from the United Way Youth Venture Program for $1000. This money will be used to help pay for the installation a drainage system on the field, and the work was done this past Saturday morning. Other projects planned by the baseball team: working together with Winchendon Little League, the Murdock team is in the process of building dugouts and eventually completing the fence from center field to left field. Dan Tenney and Jack Smith are extremely helpful to our players for completing these projects. Doesn’t it make you feel pleased and proud to read this? Everyone, thank you.

FYI: The Youth Venture Program is sponsored by the United Way and Mount Wachusett Community College. It’s purpose is to motivate students to do community service by providing seed money. The money can be used for any project that supports the community. Any student, group of students, or team interested in applying for the grants should contact our fellow bluEdevil, Steve Haddad, at MMHS 297-1256. Thank you.

2. Great news!! The very first Murdock football team to win a league championship will be honored prior to the start of Friday night’s homecoming football game. Many members of Murdock’s 1957-58 football team will be in attendance at the game and will be introduced to the fans, recalling proudly that this team won the InterCounty League championship. Be there to cheer for them all!

3. Great news!! Murdock cheerleaders will be competing at Concord Carlisle RHS on Thursday, October 18 at 7 pm. They will exhibition on October 20 at Murdock for the Pop Warner Future Stars competition being hosted at Murdock. They compete on October 27th at Marlboro HS at 3 pm, November 3 at 1:00 pm at Gansett HS, and finally Mid Wach league competititon will be at Hudson HS at 1:00 pm on November 4.

Also, the cheerleaders will be selling Chrismas wreaths, beginning Thanksgiving week. Here come the holidays, my friend.

WHEW!! The cheerleaders are very busy by design with a perfect blend of athleticism, ambition, brains, hope and hard work….putting the WIN in Winchendon every day, those girls. Thank you.

4. Great news!! Murdock Varsity beat Monty Tech 35-6. Best wishes to JV playing this afternoon at Monty Tech.

5. Great news!! Remember the girls middle school soccer team we read about last week? They play today at 3:30 at the Clark Memorial field, and their game is immediately followed by the boys team — show up and show your support for athletes who give it their all for Winchendon. Thank you.

Please keep in mind that you are encouraged to send return emails with any ideas, suggestions and informaton that may be helpful to your fellow bluEdevils. We’ll get it right out there.

Warm regards to you and yours.

Go Blue Devils, Go!

Field Hockey Team Opens Season Tomorrow at Alumni Field

September 3, 2007

The Murdock field hockey team opens its season tomorrow against Oakmont. A mix of veteran and young players will provide movement on offense and tenacious defense. Senior co-captain Paige Girard and junior co-captain Lane Kurylo are providing the on-field leadership necessary for team success. Coach Lois Girouard has installed an offense built upon experience, knowledge of the game and an aggressive pursuit of scoring opportunities, both early and often. Center Grace Maliska and big hitter Ashlyn White were born to play this offense.

Senior Ashley Ellsworth has worked diligently to master the skills needed to turn away opposition threats. She will be aided on defense by Korrie Dempsey, Molly Heinly, and Cassie Maxfield. Transition from offense to defense and defense to offense will be largely dependent upon the hustle and desire of Amanda Leclair, Allie Rocheleau, Zoey Monahan, Katelyn St. Pierre, and Whitney Ashmore. These girls are ready to meet the challenge.

Several first year varsity players will contribute in areas yet to be decided; their strengths and skills are still being evaluated to determine where and when they will make the most positive impact. These players include Teresa Duval, Brittany Martin, Katherine Landanno, Monique Melanson, Cassandra Salsedo, Kara Komprathoum, and Chanel. (Unfortunately, this reporter has not learned the last name of our newest Murdock varsity field hockey player. Please accept the reporter’s apology.)

Finally, seventh graders, Alyssa Ellsworth and Cassandra Parkhurst have begun learning the great game of field hockey. We hope to have more seventh graders join the Murdock field hockey program in preparation for what we hope will be a competitive middle school team next season. Attendance by enthusiastic fans at home games always gives a boost to players on the field. The Murdock field hockey team looks forward to your support. Go Blue!
